There’s Something in the Thicket: A Poem

Did you hear it?

The thought shot through my mind: snake.

Cold scales warming in the sun,

a ribbon of bright green — but

I didn’t quite see it. Just the flash

of its tail.

When I look up,

there’s something else too.

They are quiet, holding soft power

while they study me, ready to spring

away. Next, a sudden flash

of white tails.
